چکیده

1 (E)mbu in Cypriot Greek This paper starts out from the discussion of the different syntactic approaches to the formation of wh-questions in Cypriot Greek which involve the use of embu and the possible assumptions that have been made for the analysis of mbu, an element that may appear having as a host the wh-phrase inda. It explores the observation that the dialectal wh-phrase inda (mbu) can have four possible allomorphs, which appear to be the result of language change and as a result, present their own morphosyntactic properties, which differ from the aforementioned inda (mbu). The possibility of language change in these whphrases has been the immediate observation of a questionnaire, examining the syntactic restrictions among the allomorphs in four different age groups. The final section of this paper proceeds to show how these four allomorphs are different from the standard form by taking into account any phonological and morphosyntactic properties and by exploring different syntactic analyses for the standard form and its apparent allomorphs. Cypriot-Greek speakers have the optionality of using the element embu in whquestions introduced with wh-arguments (both subjects and objects), wh-quasiarguments and true adjuncts:

inda mbu, nambu or ine ti pu? acquiring complex structures in Cypriot Greek

The current study investigates the hypothesis that certain Cypriot Greek (CG) whphrases show similar paths of acquisition with cleft sentences based on syntactic complexity. That is, wh-phrases of the inda (mbu)-type in CG can be decomposed in an abstract way as clefts, giving ine ti pu ‘what is it that’. Targeting a comparison between these two structures, wh-questions with inda (mbu) along wi...

The Discursive Construction of Ethnic Identities: The Case of Greek-Cypriot Students

This study examines how Greek-Cypriot students aged 12 to 18, an understudied group of students, construct their ethnic identity in a complex setting such as Cyprus and what motivates the students in the selection of ethnic identity labels. The choice to focus on students aged 12-18 was made on the hypothesis that young children, who did not experience the 1974 war in Cyprus, may have a differe...

Cypriot Speech Database: Data Collection and Greek to Cypriot Dialect Adaptation

This paper describes the Cypriot Greek speech database collected in the framework of the European project OrienTel (IST-200028373) and the acoustic models adaptation techniques that were applied in order to perform dialect adaptation from Greek to Cypriot. Greek and Cypriot Greek share the same phoneme set. However, there are some differences in the way the same phonemes are pronounced. That is...

Perceptions of difference in the Greek sphere The case of Cyprus*

Cypriot Greek has been cited as “the last surviving Modern Greek dialect” (Contossopoulos 1969:92, 2000:21), and differences between it and Standard Modern Greek are often seen as seriously disruptive of communication by Mainland and Cypriot Greeks alike. This paper attempts an anatomy of the linguistic ‘difference’ of the Cypriot variety of Greek. By placing this in the wider context of the hi...

Acquisition of lightverbhood: evidence from Cypriot Greek

This experiment investigates the acquisition of (true) light verb constructions (in the sense of Kearns 1988/2002) as well as other constructions that involve a light verb in Cypriot Greek. Focusing on the acquisition of the light verb kamno ‘do/make’, this study aims to identify (i) whether light verb constructions are more frequent in Cypriot Greek than in Standard Modern Greek, (ii) what the...
